WHAT IS AWS STORAGE GATEWAY?

The AWS Storage Gateway is a service connecting an on-premises software appliance with cloud-based storage to provide seamless and secure integration between an organization's on-premises IT environment and AWS's storage infrastructure.

In this scenario, a gateway machine has to be deployed at your local premises and configure it to share the data to your S3 bucket with seamless & secure way.

AWS Storage Gateway offer three types of storage solution services.

1: File Gateway    2:Volume Gateway    3:Tape Gateway

File Gateway: A file gateway supports a file interface into Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and combines a service and a virtual software appliance. By using this combination, you can store and retrieve objects in Amazon S3 using industry-standard file protocols such as Network File System (NFS) and Server Message Block (SMB).The gateway provides access to objects in S3 as file or file share mount

Volume Gateway: A volume gateway provides cloud-backed storage volumes that you can mount as Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) devices from your on-premises application servers.data written to these volumes can be asynchronously backed-up as point in time snapshots of your volumes & stored in the cloud as EBS snapshots. snapshots are incremental that means only changes blocks will be updated. And these snapshots are also compressed to minimize the storage charges.It supports caches and store volume configurations.

Store volume offer you to store your primary data locally and backing up your data asynchronously to AWS.you can create storage volume & mount them as iSCSI devices from your on-premises application servers.data written to your stored volumes is available in your on premises storage hardware.and data will be backed up to S3 as EBS snapshots.size of these EBS can 1GB-16TB in size.

Cached volume offer you to use AWS S3 as your primary data storage while retaining frequently access data locally in your storage gateway.It will reduce the infrastructure requirement for your on premises storage.you can create storage volume upto 32TB.Your gateway stores data that you write to AWS S3 and caches the most frequently read data to local premises.

Tape gateway : A tape gateway provides cloud-backed virtual tape storage solution. It provides the virtual tape based cloud backup for your existing tape based storage devices. Each tape gateway is reconfigured with a media changer & tape drivers, which are available to your existing client backup application as iSCSI devices.A tape gateway provides a virtual tape infrastructure that scales seamlessly with your business needs and eliminates the operational burden of provisioning, scaling, and maintaining a physical tape infrastructure.

You can run AWS Storage Gateway either on-premises as a VM appliance as a hardware appliance, or in AWS as an Amazon EC2 instance.You deploy your gateway on an EC2 instance to provision iSCSI storage volumes in AWS.

How It Works : If you want to deploy gateway at your own premises either you have to configure the hardware for gateway or you can download the gateway VM from the AWS storage gateway console and activate it.

After this you have to create & configure your file share & associate that share with your S3 bucket.Your data will be encrypted and transfer of HTTPS protocol.
